NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 10, 2026
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Wednesday commissioned a pontoon and two excavators in Kumaka, Region One, as the government continues to strengthen agricultural and waterway works in the region. The equipment is valued at approximately $230 million.
Minister Mustapha said the equipment is another commitment fulfilled. He explained that it follows requests made by residents during previous outreach visits by President Dr. Irfaan Ali and himself.
Two tractors were also handed over to two villages in the region to support agricultural and community development.
The minister said the investments form part of the government's programme to restore and expand the productive capacity of Region One. He noted that the region has been identified as a major area for spice production.
He also called for greater youth participation in agriculture. Minister Mustapha announced that within one month, cattle, swine and 300 broilers will be provided to support the CSEC agricultural science programme at the local school.
The minister encouraged residents and farmers to continue working together as the government rolls out more programmes aimed at expanding opportunities in the region.
