The streets of New Amsterdam are set to come alive with speed and excitement as cyclists from across the region prepare to compete in a road race organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club of Berbice on Sunday 28 June 2026.
President of the Flying Ace Cycle Club, Randolph Roberts, told LRTVS Newswatch that the event will pedal off at 1:00 p.m. sharp from Republic Road in Charlestown, New Amsterdam. Riders will proceed through the town and into Stanleytown before returning to the public road to complete a total of 10 laps, with the race expected to culminate back at Republic Road, where the top cyclists will battle for honours.
Roberts explained that the race had originally been carded for Father’s Day but had to be postponed after a national event in Georgetown required all of the clubs to take part. The club therefore rescheduled the meet for Sunday 28 June.
The Mayor of New Amsterdam is expected to be on hand to start the race, and will also ride a free lap around the circuit with the cyclists before the official start.
Roberts expressed appreciation to the sponsors and supporters who contributed towards making the event possible, saying the names were too numerous to mention. He also appealed to other sporting personnel and to the business community in general to come on board and support the young riders, noting that without that support there would be no race.
Members of the public are being encouraged to come out in their numbers to cheer on the cyclists while cooperating with organisers during the race. Attractive prizes will be awarded to the outstanding performers in Sunday’s event. The report was filed for LRTVS Newswatch by Delon Adams.
