Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony commissioned a new health centre and staff living quarters at Red Hill, Manawarin, on Sunday 5 July 2026. The project carries a total investment of GY$60M — GY$30M for the health centre and GY$30M for the staff quarters — and is expected to improve access to healthcare for approximately 500 residents of Manawarin and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the commissioning, Dr Anthony said the investment reflects the government’s commitment to delivering modern, accessible healthcare to remote and riverine areas. The health centre is elevated to withstand flooding so services can continue uninterrupted through the year.
The facility includes a spacious waiting area, separate male and female washrooms, a fully stocked pharmacy, consultation rooms and an observation bed for patients requiring short-term monitoring. It is fitted with a telemedicine system to support consultations and improve patient care, and includes a dedicated maternal and child health room for routine growth monitoring and childhood health assessments, along with vaccine storage to support immunisation services.
To extend outreach, the Ministry plans to construct a jetty and boat house, and the health centre will be equipped with a boat and outboard engine to facilitate home visits and serve neighbouring river communities.
The newly completed staff quarters are expected to help recruit and retain healthcare workers by providing safe, comfortable accommodation in the remote community. The Ministry of Health says the project forms part of a broader strategy to expand healthcare access and improve health outcomes across Guyana.
