RUPUNUNI, REGION NINE — A 26-year-old farmer of Central Rupununi has been fined a total of GY$65,000 after pleading guilty to four traffic-related offences before a magistrate at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 25 June 2026.
The charges stemmed from an incident on Wednesday 24 June 2026, when the man was stopped while operating a motorcycle on the St Ignatius Public Road in Central Rupununi.
The court heard that he was riding without holding a valid driver’s licence, an offence for which he was fined $25,000. He was fined a further $25,000 for operating the motorcycle without the required insurance coverage.
In addition, the farmer was fined $5,000 for carrying a pillion rider who was not wearing a protective safety helmet, and $10,000 for using an unlicensed motor vehicle on a public road. The combined fines amounted to $65,000. Should he fail to pay the penalties imposed by the court, he will serve a total of six weeks imprisonment in default.
The case serves as another reminder from the authorities of the importance of complying with the country’s traffic laws, particularly those governing the safe and lawful operation of motorcycles on public roads.
