Mustapha outlines plans to expand agriculture in Laluni

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 14, 2026

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has committed to a series of interventions aimed at expanding agricultural production in Laluni and surrounding communities along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

During a meeting with farmers and residents, Minister Mustapha described Laluni as an important link in Guyana's agriculture sector and said issues surrounding access to and allocation of land must be addressed.

Responding to concerns raised by residents, the minister cautioned that the community development council should desist from distributing lands, noting that allocation must be handled by the legally authorised agency, the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission.

Given the number of concerns raised, Minister Mustapha committed to organising an outreach with the relevant authority to examine applications and resolve outstanding land matters.

The minister said the Agriculture Ministry will work with farmers on drainage and irrigation, and he has instructed the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority to conduct assessments in Laluni and First Creek.

He also encouraged farmers to identify two to three crops that can be produced on a large scale and linked to reliable markets.

Minister Mustapha identified swine and honey production as areas with significant potential, noting that training and beehives can be provided to support expanded honey production, with El Nino conditions presenting additional challenges for farmers.

He said the ministry's agencies have been instructed to work closely with farmers to help maintain production levels.

The Agriculture Ministry says it remains committed to harnessing the productive potential of communities along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
