NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 17, 2026
The number of National Insurance Scheme pensioners receiving their payments directly into bank accounts has grown significantly since 2020, according to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for finance, Dr. Ashni Singh.
Dr. Singh said the figure has increased from just over 11,000 pensioners in 2020 to more than 20,000 today.
He noted, however, that more than 40,000 pensioners are still being paid through traditional methods involving pension books and encashment of vouchers.
Dr. Singh is encouraging those pensioners to move to direct bank deposits, saying this would cut down on the cost and inconvenience linked to collecting books and encashing vouchers.
The finance minister also announced that government will soon digitize all NIS processes. This is expected to let contributors interact with the scheme from home, including registering digitally, submitting contributions and claims online, checking contribution records and tracking the progress of claims.
Dr. Singh also spoke of plans for pensioners with bank accounts to submit their life certificates through WhatsApp, which would allow pension payments to be made directly into their accounts.
He urged current contributors to regularly check their NIS contribution records to ensure that deductions made on their behalf are actually being paid over to the scheme.
The announcements came as NIS marked 57 years of service. The anniversary observance also featured long service awards for NIS employees and awards for students who excelled at the CSEC and CAPE examinations.
