NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 28, 2026
A new drainage sluice and outfall costing approximately $60 million has been completed on the East Bank of Berbice, bringing improved flood protection to homes and farmlands in the area.
The project was undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, following a commitment made by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha during an earlier engagement with residents and farmers.
The new structure is expected to significantly improve the discharge of excess water and strengthen drainage capacity in the community, reducing the risk of flooding to both residential and agricultural areas.
The sluice forms part of a wider government program to upgrade drainage and irrigation infrastructure along the East Bank of Berbice, where significant investment has gone into restoring canals and opening up additional lands for production.
Previous interventions in the area have already brought improved drainage and irrigation services to approximately 10,000 acres of agricultural land.
Officials say the completion of the new sluice represents another commitment delivered, providing greater drainage security for residents and farmers while supporting continued expansion of agricultural production along the East Bank corridor.
