Spanglish Bee 2026 promotes bilingualism among migrant learners

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 30, 2026

The Ministry of Education, through its Migrant Education Support Unit (MESU), hosted the fifth consecutive Spanglish Bee competition on September 29, as part of its education month activities.

The annual event brought together migrant learners to celebrate bilingualism, cultural diversity and inclusion, while giving students a chance to demonstrate their abilities in both English and Spanish.

The initiative also aims to strengthen students' confidence and participation within Guyana's education system, while helping to address language barriers that may affect their integration into the classroom.

For the 2026 competition, students competed in both English and Spanish competency categories. Region Three emerged as the overall winner, with Georgetown placing second and Region Four securing third place.

The Ministry of Education said initiatives such as the Spanglish Bee form part of its efforts to promote equitable access, participation and achievement for all learners, regardless of language, nationality or circumstance.

Through MESU and its partners, the ministry says it will continue to support migrant learners and promote an education system where every child can learn, participate and thrive.
