Heritage, UNESCO ties and a Berbice spelling bee mark the day’s news

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 12, 2026

Communities along the Soesdyke Highway joined in heritage celebrations on Monday, with officials renewing commitment to Amerindian development in the area.

The observance formed part of wider heritage activities taking place across the country, with a focus on supporting Indigenous communities and their continued growth.

Separately, Guyana's role on the international stage was highlighted, with officials noting that the country, from Georgetown to Paris, is playing a part in helping shape the future direction of UNESCO.

No further details were given on the specific nature of that involvement, but it was presented as part of Guyana's growing engagement with the global body.

In Berbice, young spellers shone at the Guyana Police Force Training Academy as the Guyana Police Force's Division Six hosted its annual spelling bee competition.

The competition brought together children from across the division and was held to celebrate literacy, confidence and academic excellence among the young participants.

Organisers used the event to encourage students to continue building their reading and language skills, with the spelling bee forming part of ongoing efforts to promote education within the division.

Further details on all three stories were expected to be carried in the evening newscast.
