NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 15, 2026
Two new shadehouses were commissioned at Smith Creek, Region One, on October 15, giving a lift to women farmers in the Mabaruma area.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapa commissioned the Morawhanna and Smith Creek shadehouses during a ceremony that celebrated the role of women in agriculture.
The minister said the project was significant because it showed how women are leading transformation in the agriculture sector. He praised the women's farming group behind the initiative for working together to bring the project to life.
Minister Mustapa reaffirmed government's support for Region One and committed to establishing an additional shadehouse for the group.
He also challenged the women to look beyond growing crops and to tap into agro-processing, packaging, processing and marketing what they produce so that more value remains within their communities.
The shadehouses were delivered through a partnership between the Greater Guyana Initiative, backed by ExxonMobil Guyana, Hess and CNOOC, the Guyana Marine Conservation Society, and the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute.
The initiative forms part of the ongoing work of conservationist Annette Arjoon-Martin and the Guyana Marine Conservation Society to empower women in Region One through sustainable agriculture and community development.
