Guyana has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Inter-American Commission of Women, following the close of the Commission’s 40th Assembly of Delegates in Washington, DC.
The election marks Guyana’s first return to the Commission’s executive body in 24 years, and the country secured the second highest number of votes cast by member states.
The Assembly, hosted by the Organization of American States, brought together ministers and gender authorities from across the hemisphere to address women’s rights, economic empowerment and labour inclusion.
Leading Guyana’s campaign was Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, who serves as the country’s principal delegate to the Commission.
As a member of the Executive Committee for the 2026 to 2029 term, Guyana will help shape regional policy aimed at combating gender-based violence, promoting women’s leadership and advancing gender equality across the Caribbean and the wider Americas.
