NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 29, 2026
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has confirmed the sudden death of Kelvin Johnson, holder of the national men's 10,000 metre record.
Johnson set the record of 31 minutes and 14 seconds in 2013. Thirteen years later, no Guyanese man has run the distance faster.
He was a career runner on both track and road, and he carried the Golden Arrowhead across the Caribbean and beyond. The AAG described his life as a remarkable legacy of endurance, perseverance and sporting excellence.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport also paid tribute. It remembered him not only as a runner but as a cyclist and a multisport athlete who never stopped competing.
When his competitive career ended, Johnson turned to coaching through the Trendsetters Sports Club. He became a fixture in mentoring young people from Georgetown, giving them discipline and direction.
He remained active in that role until very recently. Just two days ago, he was on the sidelines coaching young BMX riders at an event hosted by a cycling club.
Tributes describe a man who went from record breaker to mentor and used sport to give young people purpose. His 10,000 metre record still stands, and those who knew him say his legacy will outlast it.
