The Guyana Defence Force has confirmed that two separate shooting incidents occurred within a span of approximately 40 minutes along the Cuyuni River.
According to the military, a patrol vessel was conducting security operations between 4:10 p.m. and 4:50 p.m. when hostile fire was directed at its ranks on both occasions.
At the time of the incidents, the patrol was escorting civilian boats navigating the river.
In response to the attacks, ranks acted in line with established operational procedures, returning fire where necessary and manoeuvring away from the area to ensure the safety of both military personnel and civilians. No injuries were reported during Tuesday’s encounters.
The latest confrontation follows a similar incident just two days earlier, during which a GDF patrol operating near the Venezuela border was also targeted by gunfire. In that attack a soldier sustained two gunshot wounds to his right leg and was receiving medical attention.
In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, the GDF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stronger and sustained presence along Guyana’s western border, and emphasised its dedication to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and the safety of border communities.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of those responsible for the attacks, and investigations are ongoing.
