Vryman’s Erven Secondary School emerged victorious in the final of the inaugural childhood obesity prevention inter-school cricket competition hosted by the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam.
The tournament concluded on Friday 4 April, with the champions defeating the Berbice Educational Institute by seven wickets at the Rose Hall Estate Community Centre ground in East Canje, Berbice.
The competition, which spanned approximately three weeks, saw participation from grades seven to nine students representing six secondary institutions: Canje Secondary, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, New Amsterdam Multilateral, the Berbice Educational Institute, Berbice High School and Tutorial Academy.
The initiative aimed to encourage healthier lifestyles among young people through structured and enjoyable sporting activity.
The much-anticipated final saw the Berbice Educational Institute set a modest target, which Vryman’s Erven chased down confidently, finishing on 64 for three to secure the title in the first edition of the tournament.
At a brief presentation ceremony following the match, the president of the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam applauded the young cricketers and told them they were now ambassadors for an active lifestyle, urging them to take the message back to their schools that running, playing and being part of a sports team keeps the body healthy and the mind clear.
The club’s immediate past president congratulated both teams on their sportsmanship and unity, saying the final had shown what teamwork can achieve.
With the success of this first tournament, the Rotary Club has expressed plans to continue the initiative in future years, further strengthening the push toward youth wellness, teamwork and sports development within schools in the region.
