A 26-year-old farmer of Central Rupununi has been fined a total of GY$65,000 after pleading guilty to four traffic-related offences before a magistrate at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 25 June 2026.
The charges stemmed from an incident on Wednesday 24 June 2026, when the man was stopped while operating a motorcycle on the St Ignatius Public Road in Central Rupununi.
The court heard that he was riding without holding a valid driver’s licence, an offence for which he was fined $25,000. He was fined a further $25,000 for operating the motorcycle without the required insurance coverage.
In addition, the farmer was fined $5,000 for carrying a pillion rider who was not wearing a protective safety helmet, and $10,000 for using an unlicensed motor vehicle on a public road. The combined fines amounted to $65,000. Should he fail to pay the penalties imposed by the court, he will serve a total of six weeks imprisonment in default.
