KUMAKA, Region One. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha commissioned a pontoon and two excavators worth about 230 million dollars at Kumaka on Wednesday, the latest in a run of investments meant to restore and expand the productive capacity of Guyana’s north west.
The minister said the equipment answers requests residents put to him and to President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali during earlier outreaches in the region. Two tractors were also handed over, one to Manawarin and one to a second village, to support farming and community work.
Region One has been marked out by the government as a major area for spice production, and Mr Mustapha said the new machinery forms part of a wider programme to bring the region’s waterways and farmland back into full use.
He pressed for more young people to enter agriculture. Within a month, he announced, the ministry will supply cattle, pigs and 300 broiler chickens to support the agricultural science programme at the local secondary school, so that students sitting the regional examination in the subject can work with live stock rather than textbooks alone.
The minister asked residents and farmers to keep working together as further programmes are rolled out across the region.
