NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 21, 2026
President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Sunday, September 20, hosted at State House the parents of children set to benefit from life-saving heart surgeries this month.
Seventeen children with congenital heart defects will undergo surgery between September 28 and October 2, under a partnership between the Government of Guyana and Apollo Health Systems of India.
There are currently around 40 children awaiting specialized congenital heart surgery in Guyana.
President Ali said a second mission is scheduled for December to treat 10 more children, with systems being put in place to clear the remaining cases by the first quarter of 2027.
He said transportation will be provided for all the children involved, along with accommodation for those who have to travel outside of Georgetown for the procedures.
The initiative forms part of continuing efforts by the government to address the backlog of children needing specialized cardiac care that is not readily available locally.
