Minister Vanessa Benn reaffirms support for Amerindian communities at Waiakabra heritage event

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 12, 2026

Minister within the Ministry of Housing, the Honourable Vanessa Benn, attended a heritage celebration at the Waiakabra playground along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway on Saturday, October 10.

The event brought together residents and culture bearers to showcase Amerindian heritage, featuring traditional foods, crafts, music and displays of community pride.

Minister Benn interacted with stallholders and patrons throughout the celebration, listening to their concerns and to their efforts to preserve and promote indigenous culture.

Addressing those gathered, she reaffirmed the government's continued support for Amerindian communities across Guyana, noting that development must be inclusive and rooted in culture.

Among the initiatives she highlighted was the Guyana Development Bank, which she said is intended to give small business owners, particularly in hinterland and indigenous communities, greater access to financing to start and expand their businesses.

Minister Benn was accompanied by a Member of Parliament who also engaged with residents during the celebration.

Organisers said events of this kind not only celebrate identity but also strengthen community bonds and create economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

The Waiakabra heritage celebration formed part of ongoing activities to mark Amerindian Heritage Month and to highlight the contribution of Guyana's first peoples to national development.
