Housing Minister inspects $9.1b Saudi-funded road and housing project at Leonora

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 12, 2026

The Ministry of Housing is advancing major road and housing works at Leonora and Goedverwagting in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

On Friday, October 9, 2026, Minister of Housing Collin Croal inspected ongoing works that include a new four-lane interconnecting road and the development of approximately 498 acres of land for residential purposes.

The project is being carried out under the $9.1 billion Saudi-funded housing infrastructure programme, with contractors currently clearing and preparing lands for critical infrastructure.

Minister Croal said the development builds on existing housing construction in the area and will see new houses built and house lots allocated, helping to reduce the backlog of housing applications in Region Three.

Minister Croal said the development is for the construction of houses and for allocation purposes, adding that the ministry is happy about the massive investment taking place.

He noted that the investment will not only expand access to affordable houses but will also create an interconnected road network aimed at boosting economic activity and attracting investment along the corridor.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027, significantly improving access across West Coast and West Bank Demerara, with a subsequent phase set to extend toward Canal Number Two.

Further updates on the project are expected as works progress toward the 2027 completion target.
