GDB Sensitisation Session Held in Wakenaam to Promote Business Growth and Financing Opportunities

WAKENAAM, REGION THREE — A Guyana Development Bank sensitisation session was held on Wakenaam on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, giving farmers, entrepreneurs and other residents of the island information on the financing and support available to help them expand their businesses.

The engagement was led by Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Zulfikar Ally, who outlined the opportunities available through the Guyana Development Bank, particularly for those seeking to expand existing operations or establish new ventures.

Many of the residents who attended are involved in farming and small enterprise. They were encouraged to look beyond the current scale of their operations and to consider how additional financing, training and technical support could help them grow.

Minister Ally highlighted the bank’s commitment to supporting farmers and small business owners through financing offered at zero per cent interest and without collateral requirements. He also pointed to business planning assistance, financial literacy training, marketing support and technical guidance available to beneficiaries.

Residents were told that opportunities exist across several sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, transportation and retail, as well as other ventures that could contribute to local economic development.

The importance of technology was also raised during the session, with entrepreneurs encouraged to use digital platforms to promote their products and services, connect with customers and reach larger markets.

The session further provided information on access to a number of government digital services. Residents were told how to open bank accounts, use government service applications and register for a digital identification card, and were taken through the application process so they could better understand how those services can assist them in reaching government programmes.

Officials said the engagement forms part of continued efforts to bring information and opportunities directly to communities, particularly to farmers, entrepreneurs and small business owners who stand to benefit from improved access to financing, technical assistance and digital tools.
