GUYANA — Guyana is seeking to deepen health sector cooperation with Africa through the Health Development Partnership for Africa and the Caribbean (HEDPAC), with discussions on Thursday, August 13, 2026 centred on strengthening the country’s health system.
The engagement is built around South-South cooperation, allowing countries in Africa and the Caribbean to share expertise and develop practical solutions to challenges they hold in common. HEDPAC was established to promote health development and closer cooperation between the two regions.
Among the key areas under discussion is primary health care, alongside efforts to strengthen Guyana’s Food and Drug Department and improve its regulatory capacity. The stated goal is to enhance the country’s ability to regulate and safeguard access to safe, quality medicines and other health products.
The discussions also form part of a broader effort to build greater health security and self-reliance through the sharing of knowledge, expertise and resources between Africa, the Caribbean and Guyana.
The initiative additionally seeks to strengthen partnerships among government, health institutions, researchers and other stakeholders, creating opportunities for capacity building, innovation and the exchange of experience that can contribute to improved health outcomes across the participating regions.
Dr. Haile Selassie Getahun, Chief Executive Officer of HEDPAC, was acknowledged for his leadership as the partnership looks to move from cooperation and discussion towards practical results.
HEDPAC’s work includes strengthening primary health care, building resilient health systems and improving access to medical products.
The partnership signals a continued push for stronger health systems, greater regional cooperation and improved access to quality health care and medical products in Guyana and among its partner countries.
