What began as an ordinary Sunday evening ended in tragedy for residents of a Sophia yard, where a fire believed to be the result of arson destroyed two homes and left several members of the same family searching for shelter. The blaze broke out at about 6:40 p.m. on Sunday 14 June 2026 and quickly engulfed two adjacent two-bedroom flat houses standing side by side in the same compound.
Among those affected is 59-year-old driver Vaden Chester, who has spent his entire life in the community. Chester told LRTVS Newswatch that he was resting on his bed and speaking with his wife on the telephone when he noticed unusual activity outside. He said he first assumed a neighbour was throwing water while washing a motorcycle, only to realise moments later that the motorcycle itself was on fire.
What seemed at first like a small incident escalated within minutes. Flames spread through the yard and eventually consumed both his home and the home of his nephew. As thick smoke filled the area and the heat intensified, Chester turned his attention to preventing an even bigger disaster. Acting on warnings shouted by a nearby resident, he hurried to move his vehicle out of the compound, fearing that the flames could reach it and trigger an explosion.
Neighbours gathered to help as the fire continued to spread, and the Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the scene. By the time firefighters brought the blaze under control, both houses had already been completely destroyed.
Police officers who responded to the incident confirmed that a suspect has since been taken into custody. Investigators have not disclosed a motive. Relatives indicated that the individual had reportedly been experiencing personal difficulties and had recently been behaving erratically.
Despite losing his home and his belongings, Chester expressed gratitude that no lives were lost. He was supported at the scene by his children and his sister, who rushed to the yard after learning of the fire, and he is now seeking temporary accommodation with relatives while he decides on his next move.
