The Ministry of Health’s National Blood Transfusion Service, in collaboration with the University of Guyana, on Friday observed World Blood Donor Day 2026 with a ceremony at the university’s Turkeyen campus.
During the event, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony praised the progress made by the National Blood Transfusion Service, noting that Guyana has successfully moved to a voluntary blood donation system. The Minister said efforts are continuing to improve blood donation and transfusion services across the country, and announced that blood banking facilities are being added to more hospitals as part of the Government’s plan to strengthen health care services.
Dr Anthony further highlighted the introduction of nine cell saver machines, which allow doctors to collect and reuse a patient’s own blood during surgery. He noted that the first successful use of the technology took place recently.
The Minister also spoke about advancements in medical testing, explaining that some specialised tests that were once sent overseas can now be carried out in Guyana.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of tokens of appreciation to voluntary blood donors and to the organisations that continue to support the country’s blood donation programme. Health officials are encouraging more persons to become voluntary donors, noting that every donation can help save lives and support patients in need of transfusions.
