NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 8, 2026
The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) is urging the public to take greater precautions at social events, amid concerns about drink spiking, excessive alcohol consumption and illicit drug use.
CANU Director James Singh is calling on patrons to stay alert and act responsibly at parties and other social gatherings. He said substances can be hidden in drinks and other items, which puts unsuspecting people at serious risk.
Singh advised patrons not to accept drinks or substances from strangers. He also said people should make sure their drinks are never left unattended.
Anyone who believes something may be wrong, whether with themselves or someone else, should seek help immediately, according to CANU.
The warning also extends to event promoters and organisers, who are being encouraged to make safety a priority. CANU says organisers should maintain visible security at their events and make sure staff are prepared to respond to suspicious behaviour.
Medical assistance should also be easy to reach, and patrons should be encouraged to use safe transportation, CANU said.
Singh stressed that the success of an event should not be measured only by the size of the crowd or the quality of the entertainment. He said it should also be judged by whether everyone is able to get home safely.
CANU is reminding both patrons and organisers to remain vigilant and make responsible decisions when attending or hosting social events.
