GEORGETOWN, Guyana. The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit is warning the public to take greater care at social events, as concern grows over drink spiking, heavy drinking and the use of illicit drugs at parties and gatherings.
CANU Director James Singh is urging patrons to stay alert and responsible when they go out. He says substances can be hidden in drinks and other items, putting unsuspecting people at serious risk. His advice is plain: do not accept drinks or anything else from strangers, and never leave your drink unattended.
Anyone who feels something is wrong is being told to seek help immediately.
The warning is aimed at promoters and organisers as well. CANU wants event organisers to make safety a priority, with visible security on site, staff who are ready to respond to suspicious behaviour, medical help within reach, and patrons encouraged to use safe transport home.
Singh says the success of an event should not be measured only by the size of the crowd or the quality of the entertainment, but by whether everyone gets home safely.
CANU is reminding patrons and organisers alike to stay vigilant and make responsible choices, whether they are attending an event or hosting one.
