The Ministry of Education says adverse weather across parts of the country caused power fluctuations that led to a freezer in a school canteen sparking a small fire at Westminster Secondary School.
Police responded immediately and, using two fire extinguisher balls supplied by the Guyana Fire Service, put out the flames on the spot.
The Ministry confirmed that there were no injuries and no structural damage to the building. Fire officers then carried out a full sweep of the school to ensure the premises were completely safe.
The Guyana Fire Service says it remains on high alert and is actively responding to weather-related calls across the country.
The Ministry of Education says it is monitoring disruptions countrywide and is working closely with regional officials, school administrators, emergency services and utility providers to keep students and staff safe as conditions continue. The report was filed for LRTVS Newswatch by Nazima Bailey.
