Police have reported major success in the ongoing effort to combat the cultivation and trafficking of illegal narcotics, following a large-scale eradication exercise conducted in a remote area of the Upper Berbice River.
The operation, which was led by a gazetted officer and supported by a team of police ranks, took place on Wednesday 24 June 2026 between 5:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The exercise targeted two locations where investigators suspected illegal cultivation activities were taking place.
During the operation, law enforcement officers discovered two cannabis fields covering an estimated four acres of land. A thorough search of the area led to the discovery of approximately 5,000 cannabis plants ranging in height from two to six feet.
Police also uncovered a substantial quantity of processed cannabis, including an estimated 200 pounds of dried marijuana and 10 pounds of cannabis seed, along with a nursery containing roughly 30,000 cannabis seedlings intended for future cultivation.
According to police, all of the cannabis plants were uprooted and, together with the dried cannabis, seeds and seedlings, destroyed by fire at the scene. Authorities estimated the total street value of the narcotics destroyed at over GY$106 million.
Despite the significant discovery, no suspects were found at the cultivation site and no arrests were made during the operation. Police indicated that the exercise was completed without incident, and that investigators are continuing their efforts to identify those responsible for the illegal cultivation operation.
