NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 7, 2026
Fisherfolk at Sheet Anchor, Region Six, are set to benefit from improvements to their landing site, following a visit by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.
The minister met with fisherfolk beneath a bridge in the area to hear their concerns and see the current condition of the landing site for himself. Works are already being carried out there by the Ministry of Public Works.
Minister Mustapha said the Agriculture Ministry will build on those efforts with additional infrastructure. This will include the construction of a shed, the fencing of the area and the development of a proper landing site.
The improvements are expected to allow fisherfolk to moor their boats safely while they go about their daily fishing activities. At present, the fishermen work from a site that the ministry considers in need of upgrading.
The investment is also aimed at creating a more organised and stable environment for the Sheet Anchor fishing community.
According to the minister, the development will support the livelihoods of local fisherfolk and help to strengthen the fishery sector in Region Six.
The planned works are expected to give fishermen a safer and more structured facility from which to carry out their operations. The fisherfolk had the opportunity to raise their concerns directly with the minister during the visit.
No timeline or cost for the shed, fencing and landing site was given.
