An 18-year-old boxer from New Amsterdam, Berbice, delivered a stunning performance at the Caribbean Boxing Championship in St Lucia, securing the title of best youth Caribbean boxer after dismantling his opponent in just 36 seconds during the final.
The tournament, held from 28 February to 2 March 2025, saw a 16-member team of elite and emerging boxers representing Guyana.
A member of the New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, the teenager credited his victory to rigorous training and determination. He said the squad had worked hard over the past year and gone through repeated trials, and that his plan now is to dominate every competition in Guyana so that selectors have no doubt about sending him to international meets.
His coach admitted he was surprised by the young fighter’s achievement, saying he had expected a gold medal but had not anticipated the best boxer in the Caribbean award. He added that the teenager has the potential to go far.
The academy thanked the sponsors who helped make the trip possible, singling out Trims Management Services as its main sponsor alongside a list of local businesses and individuals who have supported the gym over the past year and a half.
Carl Trim, proprietor of Trims Management Services, was also on hand to congratulate the youth champion, saying that supporting focused young people of this calibre is what makes the community work worthwhile.
The victory marks a significant milestone in the young boxer’s career, positioning him as one of Guyana’s rising stars in the sport.
