A businessman has been released on station bail following his arrest in connection with the ongoing investigation into the discovery of 23 AK-47 rifles at Schoonord, West Bank Demerara.
Police say the man surrendered to investigators after a wanted bulletin was issued for him in relation to the 11 June 2026 weapons seizure. Following questioning, he was granted station bail in a substantial sum.
While investigators continue to probe the case, the arrest forms part of an extensive investigation into the recovery of the high-powered rifles, which were intercepted during an operation conducted by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit along the West Bank of Demerara. During the operation, law enforcement officers discovered the 23 AK-47 rifles along with a quantity of ammunition concealed inside a vehicle.
Crime Chief and Deputy Commissioner of Police Wendell Blanhum previously disclosed that the rifles were manufactured in the United States. He further revealed that only one of the weapons retained its serial number, while the identifying marks on the remaining 22 rifles had been deliberately removed.
The seizure is being regarded as one of the country’s most significant illegal firearm interceptions in recent times. Investigators are continuing efforts to determine the origin of the weapons and to identify those responsible for their intended distribution. Police say investigations remain ongoing.
