GEORGETOWN — Education ministers and senior officials from across CARICOM wrapped up two days of discussions on Thursday focused on strengthening education systems and preparing Caribbean learners for a changing world.
The meeting was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on 12 and 13 August under the theme “Education for Life, Purpose and Caribbean Progress.”
Guyana’s Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, officially assumed the chairmanship, taking over from Grenada’s Minister of Education, David Andrew.
In her opening remarks, Minister Parag said education must go beyond preparing students for examinations. She stressed the need to equip learners with critical thinking skills, adaptability and a sense of purpose, while preparing them to make meaningful contributions to Caribbean society.
Mathematics performance was among the major areas discussed. The Caribbean Development Bank presented its proposed mathematics enhancement programme for primary and secondary schools, developed in partnership with the University of the West Indies.
Minister Parag welcomed the initiative, pointing to Guyana’s own mathematics intervention programme and its impact on national learning outcomes, and highlighted the importance of strong foundational mathematics to science, technical training, financial literacy and the modern workplace.
