Child Protection Week 2026 began on Wednesday with a two-day training session hosted by the Child Care and Protection Agency.
The programme, being held at the Police Training Centre, brings together 100 caregivers from Regions Three, Four, Five and Six.
Delivering the opening remarks, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Vidya Prasad highlighted the important role caregivers play in shaping a child's early development.
The minister stressed that caring for children extends beyond meeting their basic needs.
She said caregivers also have a responsibility to protect children, nurture their development, and build strong relationships with their parents.
According to Minister Prasad, stronger relationships between caregivers and parents can help caregivers better understand each child and provide the support needed for them to grow and thrive.
The training forms part of activities marking Child Protection Week 2026, with a focus on strengthening child protection and improving the quality of care provided to children.
