Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal, who also has responsibility for Region One, recently attended a contract award and signing ceremony in Mabaruma.
The event was held at the Regional Democratic Council boardroom and involved the awarding of contracts for cleaning and maintenance work in the sub-region.
Local contractors from Mabaruma and nearby communities received contracts to carry out works at health centres, playgrounds, public school buildings and burial grounds.
During his remarks, Minister Croal urged contractors to complete the projects on time and to make quality work a top priority.
He also noted that awarding the contracts to persons from within the communities will help create jobs and boost economic activity in the area.
Regional officials, including the Regional Chairman and Regional Executive Officer, were also present at the ceremony.
Officials say the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the government to promote cleaner and better-maintained communities across Region One.
