NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 19, 2026
Minister of Human Services Dr. Vindhya Persaud spent hours on Saturday morning with close to 80 inmates at the Timehri women's prison, listening to their stories, struggles and challenges.
The visit left a deep impression on the minister, who holds that every woman deserves a chance to learn, grow and build a better future regardless of circumstances.
Dr. Persaud is now moving to extend free skills training to the facility through the Women's Innovation and Investment Network, known as WIIN, to help the women learn a skill and prepare for life beyond the walls.
The minister noted that skills training alone is not enough. Recognising the emotional weight many of the women carry, she committed to ongoing counselling and support for them.
Her message to the inmates was not to give up on themselves, to think positively, and to use their time to reflect, grow and prepare for a fresh start.
For Dr. Persaud, rehabilitation is not just about serving time. It is about giving women the support, skills and confidence needed to turn a new page and rebuild their lives when they reintegrate into society.
