NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 14, 2026
The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) is calling on GuySuCo to remit workers' outstanding credit union savings. The demand follows a peaceful picketing exercise held on Monday across four sugar estates, where members called for the immediate release of their money.
According to GAWU, GuySuCo has been deducting credit union contributions from workers' weekly wages since March but has failed to transfer the funds to the GAWU Co-operative Credit Union Society Limited.
The union says that despite a written commitment on August 27 to pay 50 percent of the outstanding amount, no payment has been made.
GAWU warns that the situation is preventing workers from accessing their funds for essential expenses, including school fees, medical bills and household needs.
The union also says the withheld funds are creating financial difficulties for the credit union itself.
GAWU is urging GuySuCo's management and board to act immediately, while calling on the Ministry of Agriculture and the Government of Guyana to intervene.
The union maintains that workers' savings must be released without further delay.
