Health Ministry holds cancer awareness session for Pinktober

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 19, 2026

The Ministry of Health hosted an interactive cancer awareness session on Friday, October 16, aimed at educating staff on cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

The session featured Dr. Latoya Gooding, founder of the Giving Hope Foundation and head of the oncology department at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

During her presentation, Dr. Gooding discussed cancer causes, risk factors and development, with special attention to breast, cervical and prostate cancer, which continue to affect Guyanese.

Breast and prostate cancer survivors from the Giving Hope Foundation's survivors programme also shared their personal experiences, highlighting the challenges of diagnosis and the importance of timely treatment, emotional support and community involvement.

Staff were encouraged to access recommended screening services, seek medical attention when concerns arise, and spread awareness within their families and communities.

The initiative forms part of the ministry's ongoing effort to promote preventive health care and reduce the burden of cancer in Guyana.

The ministry reinforced its message that hope starts with action, as it continues to honour breast health this month for a brighter tomorrow.
