On 2 May 2026, hundreds of Guyanese gathered at Plantation Highbury on the East Bank of Berbice to honour the strength of the indentured labourers who first arrived in 1838.
The event brought people together to remember the journey and the struggles of those who came aboard the ships Whitby and Hesperus.
It was not only a celebration but also a time for reflection. Speakers shared thoughts on the hardships and sacrifices endured, and on how those early arrivals helped shape Guyana into what it is today.
The Regional Executive Officer said Arrival Day is more than just history, describing it as a reminder of unity, diversity and the strength of the Guyanese people.
As the country continues to observe Arrival Day each year, the message remains the same: never forget the past, and continue building a strong future together.
