KINGSTON, Jamaica. A 25-year-old man whom police had connected to at least three killings across Kingston, St Andrew and St Thomas was shot dead by officers on Saturday in the Eight Miles area of Bull Bay, St Andrew.
Police say Neco Dixon drew a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at officers who were pursuing him, and was shot several times. A gun and a quantity of ammunition were recovered at the scene. The Independent Commission of Investigations, which oversees the security forces, has opened an inquiry into the shooting.
Officers were acting on intelligence that placed Dixon in the eastern St Andrew community. Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps, who commands Area Four, described him as a high-risk target, the force’s term for a suspect tied to multiple crimes.
Investigators say Dixon was the prime suspect in three murders between October 2020 and May of this year: one at Fourteen Miles, Bull Bay, in October 2020, a second in St Thomas in August last year, and a third at Rockfort in east Kingston in May. They believe he was involved in the drug trade and in contract killings, with links to several gangs, and say he may be tied to further deaths.
Dixon first came to police attention in 2017, when he was arrested and charged with murder. Whether that case remains before the courts was not confirmed.
His death follows the arrest last month of 19 alleged members of the Genocide gang, among them its accused leader, Tefari Green. They face charges under Jamaica’s anti-gang law over a string of murders, shootings and robberies across five parishes between 2021 and this year. Investigators allege Green directed the gang from prison, where he was being held on an unrelated matter.
