The Ministry of Education held a parent meeting for Samaruma Special School in Region One yesterday, ahead of the facility's opening as the region's first special education school.
The meeting was conducted by Dr. Kon Chong, Assistant Chief Education Officer for Special Education Needs and Disabilities, along with Mr. Jason Lal, education officer for special education in Region One.
Parents of learners who will attend Samaruma Special School were given information on the school, the support that will be available to their children, and the role families are expected to play in supporting their children's education.
Following the parent meeting, a training session was held for prospective teachers and teacher aides who will work at the school.
The training focused on preparing staff to effectively support learners with diverse learning needs and disabilities, while creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Samaruma Special School will be the first special education school in Region One and marks a significant step toward strengthening inclusive education in the region.
The school is expected to ensure that children with disabilities and diverse learning needs have greater access to specialised support, with officials saying the focus remains on ensuring every learner is valued, supported, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
