A nurse’s decision to report a suspicious package to police may have prevented prohibited items from reaching the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven.
According to reports, the woman visited the Bartica Police Station at about 9:40 a.m. and handed over a parcel containing several snack items after becoming suspicious of its contents.
The nurse reportedly told investigators that a man had given her the package to take to the prison. She became alarmed after noticing a strong scent resembling marijuana coming from the parcel.
Police ranks subsequently opened the package in the nurse’s presence and discovered 18 packs of assorted snacks, including cheese curls and other popular treats.
On closer inspection, officers found that several of the snack packets had been tampered with and were concealing suspected cannabis, tobacco leaves and a pack of mints.
Authorities later confirmed that the suspected cannabis amounted to approximately 29.8 grams.
Following the discovery, police attempted to locate the individual who allegedly handed the parcel to the nurse, but efforts to find him proved unsuccessful.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue their search for the suspect and work to determine whether others were involved in the attempted smuggling operation.
