NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 2, 2026
A Cuban national was electrocuted and killed on Tuesday morning at a construction site in Plantation Houston, after the metal scaffold he and two other workers were on came into contact with overhead power lines.
Two other workers were injured in the accident. They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were treated.
The three men were working on the metal scaffold outside a building when the incident happened. The scaffold reportedly rolled backwards and touched the overhead lines. All three men received an electric shock.
One of the workers was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) confirmed that the scaffolding came into contact with one of its 13.8 kV primary distribution lines.
Following the accident, GPL issued a reminder to contractors, workers and members of the public to be careful when working near electric lines, poles and other infrastructure. The company stressed that proper safety measures must be maintained at all times to prevent similar accidents.
Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
The identities of the dead man and the two injured workers have not been publicly released. The condition of the injured men was not immediately available.
