Parika stelling upgrade advances with river defence sealed, works 15 percent complete

NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 16, 2026

Construction works to transform the Parika Ferry Stelling into a modern port are advancing, with the river defence area now fully sealed against flooding and the stelling itself approximately 15 percent complete.

The update came during a recent site inspection by the minister within the Ministry of Public Works and his technical team, along with the minister within the Ministry of Agriculture.

A senior district engineer overseeing the project reported that teams are currently working on pile caps, which will support the installation of pre-cast beams and decking.

He noted that the pre-cast beams and decking are expected to be transported to the site over the next two weeks for installation.

The diversion route serving the area has also been completed, allowing traffic to continue moving while construction proceeds on the main stelling.

The engineer said the diversion now allows cargo loads in excess of 20 tons to traverse to the various locations serviced by the Transport and Harbours Department.

The Parika stelling project forms part of government's wider drive to modernize transportation infrastructure across the country and strengthen connectivity between regions.

Officials say the works are expected to improve the movement of both passengers and goods once completed.
