Xi lands in Egypt — a first in a decade, timed to a region on fire

CAIRO — China’s President Xi Jinping has arrived in Egypt on his first visit in ten years, carrying an agenda of deeper economic ties and closer strategic alignment at a moment when the Middle East offers little calm to align around.

Egypt sits astride the Suez Canal — the throat through which much of China’s trade with Europe breathes — and Cairo has long been a cornerstone of Beijing’s ambitions in Africa and the Arab world. A decade between visits makes the timing itself part of the message: with the region in turmoil, China wants its friendships in person.
