GUYANA — A twelve-year vision has finally been realised, as Guyanese designer Jason Sheran completes an evening gown covered entirely in coins.
The journey began in 2013, when Sheran first created coin swimsuits for Miss Jam Zone and PDJ. For Guyana’s 51st Independence anniversary, an evening gown covered in coins was started but never finished — the weight of the coins kept pulling the fabric down.
When approached to design for Miriam, the designer decided to complete that unfinished dream. Using stronger, more durable fabric, the entire gown was covered in coins — but with respect, the coins were not drilled or damaged; a special glue was used to attach them.
The dress has no zipper. It laces up the back, and it is extremely heavy. Four coins on the front of the dress are turned backwards — a symbolic nod to Miriam being the fourth Guyanese girl to compete in the Caribbean Culture Queen pageant 2026, and a tribute to this being the fourth coin garment Mr. Sheran has created.
A blue liquid-satin scarf was added to complete the look.
The designer says the dress means a great deal to him — the closing chapter of a legacy of creating with coins, a legacy now finally worn on a human body.
