NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — October 21, 2026
Forty social workers from several departments of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security have been trained in aggression replacement therapy, a approach aimed at helping at-risk young people deal with anger and aggression.
The two-day workshop was held on October 15 and 16, 2026. It was hosted by the ministry's Family Enhancement Services section.
The participants came from a range of departments within the ministry. These were the Child Care and Protection Agency, the Support Services for Persons with Disability unit, the Sexual Offence and Domestic Violence Policy unit, the Juvenile Justice department and the Probation department.
During the sessions, the officers were exposed to the theories, techniques and principles that underpin aggression replacement therapy. Particular emphasis was placed on developing and implementing effective interventions for at-risk youths and juveniles who are experiencing aggression and anger-related challenges.
The workshop brought together officers who deal with young people and families in different settings, from child protection and juvenile justice to probation and support services. Having staff from these areas in one training allowed them to build a common understanding of how aggression is addressed.
In all, 40 officers were trained through the initiative. The ministry says the training strengthens its capacity to address youth behavioural issues.
The workshop reflects the ministry's focus on equipping its frontline staff with practical skills for working with young people whose anger and aggression put them at risk.
