NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 22, 2026
Child Protection Week 2026 began on Wednesday with a two-day training session hosted by the Child Care and Protection Agency at the Police Training Centre.
The programme brings together 100 caregivers drawn from Region Four, Region Three, Region Five and Region Six.
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, delivered the opening remarks and highlighted the important role caregivers play in shaping a child's early development.
The minister stressed that caring for children extends beyond meeting their basic needs.
She said caregivers also have a responsibility to protect children, nurture their development and build strong relationships with parents.
Dr. Persaud said stronger relationships between caregivers and parents can help caregivers better understand each child and provide the support needed for them to grow and thrive.
The training forms part of activities marking Child Protection Week 2026, which is focused on strengthening child protection and improving the quality of care provided to children.
