“The river chased me for twenty minutes” — Nepal’s flood toll passes one thousand

KATHMANDU — Nepal’s catastrophic floods have now claimed more than a thousand lives, and the rescue effort has narrowed to some of its hardest ground: hydropower stations built into the mountains, where workers were underground when the water came.

One surviving worker described river water smashing into his tunnel and pursuing him through it for some twenty minutes before he reached safety — a picture of how little warning the mountains gave. Crews are still working to reach colleagues who did not get out, even as the wider country counts its dead.
