NEW AMSTERDAM, Berbice — September 2, 2026
A new $500 million hostel will provide better temporary accommodation for hinterland residents who travel to Georgetown for medical care, the Minister of Amerindian Affairs announced on September 1.
The minister made the announcement at the official opening of Amerindian Heritage Month 2026 celebrations. She said the project fulfils a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
The facility is aimed especially at persons who must come to the capital for advanced and specialised medical care. The minister said construction is expected to begin shortly.
She noted that the existing Amerindian hostel continues to play a critical role. Up to the end of August 2026, approximately 1,835 persons from across the hinterland received assistance through that facility.
According to the minister, the support often goes beyond a place to stay. It includes transportation assistance, such as flights and other travel arrangements, to help residents return to their villages after receiving care.
She said the modern hostel forms part of the government's wider effort to improve access to services for indigenous people and to further bridge developmental gaps between the hinterland and the coastal regions.
The government says it remains committed to ensuring that hinterland communities benefit from improved access to health care, education, infrastructure and other essential services.
The new hostel is expected to offer better conditions and greater comfort for indigenous residents who travel long distances to access services in Georgetown.
