GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Hinterland residents who travel to the capital for advanced and specialised medical care are to get a new G$500 million hostel, the Minister of Amerindian Affairs announced on Monday, September 1, at the official opening of Amerindian Heritage Month 2026.
The minister said the project fulfils a commitment made by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and will deliver significantly improved temporary accommodation for residents of hinterland communities who must come to Georgetown for treatment. Construction is expected to begin shortly.
The existing Amerindian hostel continues to carry a heavy load. Up to the end of August 2026, approximately 1,835 persons from across the hinterland had received assistance through the facility — support that often includes transportation, including flights and other travel arrangements to help residents return to their villages.
The minister described the modern facility as part of the government’s wider effort to improve access to essential services for indigenous people and to narrow the development gap between the hinterland and the coast. The government says it remains committed to better access to health care, education, infrastructure and other services for hinterland communities.
The new hostel is expected to offer better conditions and greater comfort for indigenous residents who travel long distances to reach services in Georgetown.
