CANJE CREEK, Berbice — A joint police operation in the Canje Creek has uncovered and destroyed three cannabis farms covering roughly ten and a half acres, with an estimated 53,500 plants ranging from four inches to six feet in height.
The first cultivation site covered about six acres and held an estimated 30,000 plants. Ranks also found a makeshift camp, a drying area and approximately 20 pounds of dried cannabis. A second farm of about four acres contained around 20,000 plants, along with two makeshift camps and a nursery of some 9,600 seedlings set out in 75 trays. The third and smallest site, roughly half an acre, held an estimated 3,500 plants.
Further searches of the area turned up a single-barrel shotgun, four shotgun cartridges and a haversack containing three suspected rounds of ammunition — two believed to be 9mm and one .32.
All of the plants were uprooted and destroyed on site, together with the camps, the drying area and the dried cannabis. Police put the total value of the narcotics destroyed at G$22,834,696: G$13,043,800 in plants, G$1,626,240 in nursery seedlings and G$8,164,656 in dried cannabis.
No arrests were made in connection with the operation. Investigations are continuing.
